November 16, 2011 - Tierradentro, Colombia

The road to Tierradentro from Popayán is notoriously difficult. Several travelers warned us it would be a long and bumpy journey. Sure enough, they were right. Not only was it long and bumpy, it was also on the edge of huge cliffs; and the heavy rain fall only added to its unfavorable condition. Six hours later, we arrived safely to the entrance of San Andres de Pisimbala. We spent the night at Lucerna, a lovely hospedaje owned by a charming, elderly couple. The owners were so sweet and endearing that it felt like a visit to our grandparents house. Early the next morning, we headed to the underground tombs of Tierradentro. It was a challenging climb up steep mountains but the incredible view of the Andean cordillera made it worthwhile. Carved directly into volcanic rock, these underground funerary structures were made to simulate "the home of the living." The architecture, detailed paintings, and mystical landscapes of each tomb reminded us that we were on sacred land, Tierradentro.
