Crossing the border to Peru through the coast can be a difficult route however we made it through safely. We arrived late at night but the city was alive with music, bars, clubs and people eager to party. If you've heard about Mancora, then you've heard about the hippies and the surfers. That's exactly how it is but we must admit it was pretty awesome. The first night we stayed at one of the only "hospedaje" with availability. We quickly learned that was a mistake when the next morning we awoke with the smell of sewage and our room filled with shitty water. You can guess the rest. After such a harrowing experience (of course we're exagerrating) we decided to treat ourselves to a beach front hotel called Las Ojas. With an ocean view balcony, tv, fresh linen and hot water, it was hard to resist staying another night. We're happy to be in Peru downing Pisco sours and eating fresh ceviche.

In Cuenca we were welcomed by a friend's family who arranged a room for us to stay in. These last couple of days we've been fortunate enough to live and learn amongst locals. We've shared the stories, traditions and cuisine of their families. From hearing the sound of the Bandoneon played by a local musician (grandfather to our host) to eating every imaginable dish, we enjoyed every minute of it. The people of Cuenca are humble, traditional and above all proud of their heritage. It was a pleasure to experience their world for five memorable days.
December 3-4, 2011 - Guayaquil, Ecuador
Guayaquil was so more than we expected. A modern metropoly on the coast of Ecuador, this city continues to thrive as the industrial capital of Ecuador. Oliver, a cousin of a close friend, was a wonderful host who in a short period of time drove us through all the main parts of the city. As we drove, he was eager to share the culture, politics and food of his beloved city. Thanks to him, we tasted a few local dishes like Seco de Chive and Bolon... so good!
